Pilot Demonstrates Impact of Neurologic Music Therapy in Neurorehabilitation

Chiltern Music Therapy has recently completed a six-month pilot of Neurologic Music Therapy® (NMT™) at British Home, with results showing clear benefits for residents and staff alike.

Working closely with the multidisciplinary team, we supported 14 residents through individual and group sessions. Therapy goals were directly linked to each person’s rehabilitation plan, with 83% achieving their targets. Every participant reported a lift in mood, alongside improvements in areas such as stress, engagement, self-expression, physical function and cognition.

Staff also noted the positive impact, with 100% agreeing that NMT introduced valuable new techniques and enhanced their own practice.

“We shared an outpatient together and music therapy had a positive impact immediately. It is both enjoyable and therapeutically rewarding to the outpatient and have agreed for further sessions because of its impact.” - Occupational Therapist

Following the pilot, the service is now continuing at British Home, with plans to expand provision, embed Music Care Plans for all residents, and build further links with the MDT.

This collaboration has shown how music can make a meaningful difference in rehabilitation enriching both patient outcomes and professional practice.
