Nether Hall Care Home - Impact Report 2024-25

Valuable insights to our music therapy sessions at Nether all Care Home, including impacts and findings from both solo and group sessions.

9 March 2026

This report is about Music Therapy at Nether Hall Care Home between July 2024 and July 2025.

Music Therapy offers the residents at Nether Hall Care Home the chance to engage in musical activities to support their wellbeing. As well as supporting individual needs, Music Therapy can provide a point of social connection and a chance for residents to get to know each other.

A member of the activities team was asked "what does music therapy bring to the home?" and responded:

"Wonderful reminiscing opportunities. Social interactions which are personalised and rewarding. Fun and laughter, physical activity with actions and expressions. A sense of calm and relaxation, a visit from a friend. Learning opportunities for our team, working alongside Becky who seeks and values our knowledge of our residents."

The Music Therapist at Nether Hall is Becky. She visits every week on a Thursday morning. Usually she holds 2-3 individual sessions lasting 20-30 minutes each, and one group session lasting about 50 minutes. Across the 12 month period, 110 individual sessions and 48 group sessions took place, with a total of 52 residents attending.

Group sessions involve:

  • Welcome and closing song - for familiarity and orientation
  • Choosing songs or thinking of songs around a theme - for reminiscence, memory stimulation, support sense of identity
  • Action songs or movement to music - for cognitive stimulation, executive function and motor skills
  • Creating new words to an existing song around a theme - for cognitive stimulation and self-expression
  • Playing percussion instruments and improvising music - for self-expression, social interaction and non-verbal communication

Individual sessions are delivered in a flexible way, with session frequency, length and content tailored to the individual’s needs. The full report features two small case studies from Nether Hall, as well as further detail on the above services and their outcomes.
