Care Homes

Music therapy to support wellbeing, connection, and daily life in Care Homes.

At Chiltern Music Therapy, we have over 15 years’ experience supporting older people in care homes, including those living with dementia or complex age-related needs. Our services are flexible and designed to complement everyday care, enhancing residents’ emotional, social, and cognitive wellbeing.

How Music Therapy works:

  • Music therapy and music sessions use rhythm, melody, and structured musical activities to support residents in multiple ways:
    • Lift mood and provide space for emotional expression
    • Support communication, speech, and language
    • Encourage social connection and relationship-building
    • Provide cognitive stimulation and meaningful engagement

Sessions can be delivered one-to-one, in small groups, or in larger community activities, depending on residents’ needs and care home settings.

Who can benefit from our services:

Music therapy and community music can support adults in care homes, including those with:

  • Dementia, Alzheimer’s, or age-related conditions
  • Complex health needs
  • Stroke recovery
  • Degenerative illnesses such as Parkinson’s or Multiple Sclerosis
  • Learning disabilities
  • Mental health needs

Our sessions are tailored to the individual, helping everyone to engage at their own pace,  including those who may be bedbound or unable to join group activities.

Our Approach:

Our Music Therapists and Community Musicians combine clinical expertise with creativity to provide personalised, inclusive care in care homes. Working closely with staff and families, we support residents’ emotional wellbeing, communication, relationships, and cognitive engagement, helping them feel more connected and settled. Our work is:

  • Participatory rather than performative
  • Inclusive of residents at all stages, including those who are bedbound
  • Designed to sit alongside existing activities and entertainers
  • Delivered by qualified music therapists or specialist community musicians
  • Focused on access for all residents, not just those able to attend group activities

Our Offer:

Our services are tailored to each care home and can be delivered in-person at the care home or online, depending on what works best for residents and staff.

  • Half-day or full-day sessions – tailored sessions including one-to-one bedside support, small therapeutic groups, or larger group activities
  • Choirs and community music sessions – regular sessions that can be embedded into weekly routines
  • Online Choir in a Care Home – live, interactive sessions accessible to care homes anywhere
  • Training and resources – supporting staff and families to continue the benefits of music therapy

Why Music Therapy Matters:

Music therapy helps residents engage meaningfully, supporting wellbeing, connection, and quality of life. It can improve mood, encourage social interaction, and provide residents with a sense of purpose and enjoyment.

By involving staff and families, improvements can be sustained, helping residents enjoy a fuller, more connected daily life.

Funding Options:

We understand the financial pressures facing care homes and work flexibly with each setting. Many homes commission regular sessions, spreading the cost across the whole home. Some care homes also choose to offer optional sessions that are funded directly by residents’ families. In addition, we have a bursary scheme to help ensure residents can access music therapy, regardless of financial circumstances.
