Chiltern Shares: Managing Workplace Dynamics in Services

'Chiltern Shares' is a training series designed to support Music Therapists in growing and sustaining their work, whether you’re running a small business, working as a freelancer or exploring new opportunities.

Session 4 of 'Chiltern Shares': ‘Managing Workplace Dynamics in Services

Working as a music therapist often means operating within complex systems - including health, education, social care, and community services - where differing roles, expectations, and pressures can significantly shape clinical practice. This workshop provides a supportive and reflective space to explore how workplace dynamics impact therapeutic work, professional identity, and wellbeing.

The workshop balances theory with practical application, offering tools, scripts, and case-based discussions that participants can immediately apply to their own settings. Throughout, there is a strong focus on safeguarding, ethical decision-making, and self-management - helping therapists to work confidently, sustainably, and in alignment with professional standards.

Who is this for? For Music Therapists (freelance or in smaller organisations) who deliver services in settings like schools, hospitals, care homes, or community projects.

What we’ll cover:

  • How workplace dynamics (e.g. in MDTs, education, or healthcare teams) impact your clinical work and professional identity
  • Ways to communicate clearly and maintain healthy professional boundaries
  • Practical tools for handling conflict, role confusion, safeguarding, and ethical issues
  • Reflections on managing expectations, pressures, and your own wellbeing within complex systems
