Could Online Music Therapy Work For You?

For many people, accessing therapy isn’t always straightforward. Travel, busy schedules, health needs, caring responsibilities, location and simply finding the right time and space can all make it harder to access the support you need.

Online music therapy offers another way to connect with a music therapist, from a place that feels comfortable and familiar to you.

We’d like to share some of the ways online music therapy can make accessing support easier.

1. Removing barriers to accessing therapy

One of the benefits of online sessions is the flexibility they can offer. You don’t necessarily need to travel to an appointment or rearrange your day around getting to a therapy space.

For people living further away, those with mobility or health challenges, or anyone balancing work, family or caring responsibilities, being able to access therapy online can make a real difference.

2. Skip the journey

With an online session, there’s no need to factor in travel time, transport or the potential cost of getting to an appointment.

Instead, you can join your session from wherever you are, giving you back some of the time and energy that travelling to an appointment can take.

3. A calmer start to your session

For some people, travelling to an appointment or sitting in a busy waiting room can feel stressful. Online sessions allow you to join from your own space, without that additional journey.

You can settle into your surroundings before your session begins and take a moment to prepare yourself for the time ahead.

4. The comfort of familiar surroundings

Being at home can help some people feel more relaxed and comfortable during therapy.

Your own surroundings, familiar objects and personal space can provide a sense of familiarity that may help you feel more at ease as you explore music, emotions and experiences during your session.

Your therapist can also work with you to think about how to create a space that feels comfortable and suitable for your online sessions.

5. Making music therapy more accessible

Perhaps most importantly, online sessions can help make music therapy available to more people.

Whether distance, transport, health, work or caring responsibilities make attending in person difficult, online music therapy provides another option for accessing support.

Of course, everyone is different and online therapy may not be the right option for everyone. Your music therapist can talk with you about whether online sessions could work for your individual circumstances and needs.
