Introducing Our New Online Music Therapy Parkinson’s Group

We’re excited to introduce our Online Music Therapy Parkinson’s Group, part of Chiltern Online Therapy Space, Chiltern Music Therapy’s online music therapy provision. This new group will offer people living with Parkinson’s Disease the opportunity to explore the benefits of music, movement and singing in a supportive and friendly online environment.

Led by a qualified Neurologic Music Therapist, the group will use music and rhythm to support movement, speech and breathing, while creating opportunities for social connection.

Understanding Parkinson’s

Parkinson’s Disease is a progressive neurological condition that affects movement. Symptoms can vary from person to person and may include tremor, stiffness, slowness of movement and difficulties with balance and coordination.

Parkinson’s can also affect speech, voice and breathing which sometimes makes it harder to speak clearly or be heard. These changes can impact everyday communication, confidence and social participation.

Finding enjoyable ways to practise movement, use the voice and connect with others can play an important role in supporting quality of life for people living with Parkinson’s.

How music therapy can help

Neurologic Music Therapy uses music-based techniques to support rehabilitation and help people maintain function when living with a neurological condition. Music and rhythm can provide helpful cues for movement, while singing and vocal exercises offer opportunities to practise breathing, voice production and speech.

Music therapy can:

  • Support movement and coordination through rhythmic activities that encourage larger movements, timing and coordinated actions.
  • Encourage clearer, stronger speech through singing and vocal exercises.
  • Support breathing and breath control through gentle breathing exercises and structured vocal activities.
  • Build confidence and motivation by making practice enjoyable and sharing musical experiences with others.
  • Create social connection through group singing and the experience of making music together.

It’s not about musical ability or getting everything right. It’s about using music in an enjoyable, supportive way to work towards individual goals and celebrate what each person can do.

About the group

Our online sessions will provide a welcoming and supportive space for people living with Parkinson’s to make music, practise movement and voice exercises and also have the chance to connect with others who may share similar experiences.

Each session will last approximately 50 minutes and will be led by a qualified Neurologic Music Therapist. Activities will be adapted to suit participants’ individual abilities and home environments, with exercises offered where safe and appropriate.

Sessions may include gentle physical warm-ups, breathing and vocal exercises, rhythmic movement activities and group singing. Familiar songs will be used to encourage movement, coordination and vocal production, alongside opportunities to relax and reflect at the end of the session.

You don’t need to play a musical instrument or have any musical experience to take part. Many activities can be done using your hands, your voice or everyday surfaces, such as tapping a rhythm on a table.

Because the group is online, you can join from the comfort of your own home, without needing to travel. We aim to keep the group small, with around 8 to 10 participants per session, so that everyone can receive appropriate support and encouragement.

Session information

Sessions will take place weekly online and will last approximately 50 minutes.

  • Cost: £15 per session when booking pay as you go.
  • Block bookings: Discounted rates will be available when booking multiple sessions.
  • Group size: Around 8 to 10 participants per session.
  • Who can join: People living with Parkinson’s Disease who are suitable for group music therapy.
  • Starting date: Tuesday 10th November 2026

All sessions will be led by a qualified Neurologic Music Therapist. Music Therapists hold a Master’s degree and are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Neurologic Music Therapy(™) is an additional specialist training qualification that equips therapists to use specific, evidence-based music techniques to support people with neurological conditions.

If you or someone you know is living with Parkinson’s Disease, our online group could be an opportunity to explore music therapy. We’d love to hear from you.
