Interview: Alice's "Finding Voices" Group for Trans and Non-Binary Adults
Could you tell us more about the group you ran online (who, what, where, when)?
The Changing Voice group was a 4-month pilot project I ran from February to May 2021 through Chiltern Music Therapy, exploring voice and identity with trans and non-binary adults in a digital music therapy group. This group was an innovative use of Music Therapy – using group music-making as a new way to explore the concepts of voice, identity, gender, and authenticity, and how they are linked. We spent a few weeks preparing participants, then held two concurrent online groups weekly for three months. Around 16–20 people took part overall.
Do you think online sessions were particularly beneficial for this group? Why?
Yes, absolutely! Being online allowed people from different locations to join, and it gave participants a level of privacy and comfort, especially important for those self-conscious about their voice or appearance. The online setting helped reduce some of the pressure that can come with being physically present in a room.
Was there a particular activity or key moment you can share?
We created a vocal soundscape over the weeks - a collective recording where members contributed spoken or sung elements, reflecting on their voice and identity as it evolved. One member said: “It is so affirming to have a space where my voice isn’t being pulled in either direction - masculine or feminine. I can just be me, and my voice can be neutral; there’s no pressure to sound male or female.” It was wonderful to hear that feedback and to hear how important this sort of space was for people!
Did you receive any feedback you'd like to share?
Feedback was very positive! One person only attended one session but said it gave them clarity and motivation to explore their voice further. Others shared that the group helped them start viewing their voice in a more accepting, even positive, light. Some said they’d now feel more confident attending an in-person group after starting online.
