New music therapy group for people with aphasia

We’re excited to introduce our new Online Music Therapy Aphasia Group, the first group in the Chiltern Online – Therapy Space, Chiltern Music Therapy’s brand-new online initiative. With years of experience supporting people with aphasia in different settings, this felt like the perfect group to launch in our new online space.

Understanding aphasia

Aphasia is a condition that affects how people use and understand language. It can make speaking, following conversations, reading, or writing difficult, but it doesn’t affect intelligence. People with aphasia still know what they want to say,  the challenge is finding the words.

Aphasia affects around 350,000 people in the UK, making it more common than Parkinson’s Disease, cerebral palsy, or muscular dystrophy (Say Aphasia). With so many people affected, opportunities to connect, communicate, and support recovery are more important than ever.

How music can help with aphasia

Music Therapists use singing, rhythm, and sound in a way that helps people with aphasia find new ways to communicate and connect. Music activates many parts of the brain, which means it can support recovery even when language centres are affected.

Music therapy can:

  • Make it easier to get words out, especially with rhythm and melody
  • Boost confidence and reduce frustration
  • Create joy and connection through shared music-making
  • Offer a space for expression -  no musical skills required

It’s not about performance; it’s about using music as a bridge to communication.

About the group

Our online sessions will be a safe, friendly space where people can make music, connect with others who understand, and work towards personal goals at their own pace.

Because the group is online, you can join from anywhere with an internet connection, all from the comfort of home. With two weekly times to choose from, you’ll have the flexibility to fit music therapy around your other commitments.

We are keeping the groups small to ensure that everyone has the support they need throughout.

Session information

Sessions will take place weekly on zoom:

  • Tuesday mornings at 10am
  • Thursday afternoons at 3pm

Pay as you go £15 per session - discounts available when you book multiple sessions.

Joining the sessions

If you or someone you know is living with aphasia, this group could be a chance to reconnect through music. To find out more or to register your place, please complete the referral form here.
